Workington Town centre Scott Akehurst says he was relieved to overcome initial nerves as he picked up his first try for the club in Sunday’s 22-18 win over Hunslet Hawks.

Akehurst was called into the side in place of the injured Kurt Horton with Jarrad Stack moving to second row for the tie against the Hawks.

It was Akehurst’s third appearance for the club and his first run out since Town’s 38-16 defeat to Bradford Bulls at Zebra Claims Stadium on June 21.

“I was really nervous before the game,” the former Maryport amateur said. “I’ve not had many minutes this year.

“I dropped the first ball but then after that I got right into it and really enjoyed it. I was chuffed to bits with the try.”

After Brett Carter’s earlier score was cancelled out by Hunslet’s Danny Grimshaw, Akehurst’s effort put Town back in front in the 28th minute.

He was the recipient of a knock-on by Hunslet’s Jimmy Watson as the Hawks star fumbled a grubber kick from Jarrod Sammut just a few yards from his goal-line leaving Akehurst with a simple put-down.

“I just carried on running through and luckily the full-back was out of the game,” Akehurst said whilst describing his try.

“So I thought ‘thank you very much, I’ll have that’ and put it down. Fortunately it was two or three yards off the line so it was just a drop-over.”

Commenting on his first year as a professional he added: “It’s going good, I’m really enjoying training.

“It’s a lot of commitment and I knew right away I wasn’t going to walk into a spot in the team.

“Hopefully, now I’m in, I’ve done enough to keep my spot.

“I thoroughly enjoyed playing at the weekend and I’m really pleased to get on the scoreboard.

“The lads are bouncing and we’re all on a high, we need to keep things going and push on for next week.

“We took our foot off the gas in the second half and gave away some penalties and we were guilty of some daft mistakes.

“But everybody was fighting for each other towards the end and we need to kick on for the game against Featherstone.”

Workington Town are again putting on their ‘Kids for a Quid’ initiative this weekend for their fixture against Featherstone.

Children under 16 will be allowed entry for £1 with a paying adult.

Children will be given a loyalty voucher at the turnstiles and those who hand in the completed voucher at Town’s following home fixture against Doncaster will be entered into a draw to win a Junior Rover ticket for the 2016 season.

Duo tickets for the Featherstone and Doncaster games are also available, priced at £25 for adults and £15 for concessions which grants entry to both fixtures.
