Workington Town winger Brett Carter has put down the current team spirit in the squad as the reason he committed to a new two-year deal at the club.

The Scotland international admitted that he was originally going to sign for just one year but increased the length of his stay after his teammates committed to longer stretches at the club.

“It’s a good club to be at,” he said.

“The main thing that has kept me here is the lads and seeing everyone else signing two-year deals.

“I was only going to sign one but, with most of the squad signing two, I wanted to be a part of that.

“And they are the main reason I love being here.

“It has been a difficult year with dual registration and being out in spells.

“I’ve enjoyed the back-end of the season a lot more.

“And since the other lads have signed it’s made me want to stay a bit longer.”

Carter has been in exceptional form for Town in the Super 8s scoring seven tries in six games.

That includes two hat-tricks to take his tally up to 11 in 18 games.

“There wasn’t as much pressure on me and I’ve enjoyed my rugby,” he continued.

“I’ve had good ball recently and that’s led to me scoring tries.

“I’ve not scored a hat-trick in six years of being here and I’ve scored two in the space of a few weeks which is great.”

Carter admitted he contemplated his options but after consideration he was happy to stay at the club.

“I spoke to a couple of people to see if there were any options but I thought it would be a lot harder for me to leave this club if the lads are staying together.

“As long as the team spirit is here, I’m happy to stay.”
