Workington Town banked £25,000 from the sensational victory over rivals Whitehaven on Sunday, vice-chairman Mark Fryer has revealed.

The 60-20 home win ensured Town finished fourth in the Championship Shield table and booked a semi-final date away at Featherstone on September 27.

Town's position in the table means they will net £25,000 in prize money.

Fryer said: "The weekend's game was worth £25,000 to us. It meant we finished fourth, that's how valuable it was.

"We played really well against Whitehaven, there is no doubt about it.

"Some of the tries were absolutely scintillating. We got off to a sensational start and we just built on that."

Sunday's derby win was Town's seventh victory in the last nine games. The West Cumbrians had endured a difficult period of games before the run but have turned it round to end their season on a high.

Fryer added: "We went through a sticky patch but all teams do. It's testament to the team's and coaching staff's attitude.

"We had that big run of four defeats against the four big teams. We went to Whitehaven and won and that was the start. It was the catalyst to a pretty decent run which has culminated in us finishing fourth and getting that extra funding which will go into the pot for next year."

Before Town take on Featherstone in the semi-finals, they must face face Dewsbury away on Sunday (3pm ko).

And Fryer is adamant that the team won't be taking their foot off the gas.

"We will be going into the game with the same attitude because we want to keep the momentum going."
