Workington Town boss Dave Clark remained positive, despite his team seeing victory snatched out of their hands in the dying minutes of yesterday’s clash with Doncaster.

Town were winning 26-24 with two minutes remaining when Doncaster took advantage of their extra man, with Callum Phillips being sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.

Russell Spiers surged over the try line to clinch victory from the jaws of defeat for Doncaster, with Jack Miller converting to win 30-26.

But Clark was still upbeat, saying: “It was a great effort from my players – I can’t ask any more of them really.

“I think in the second half we had some opportunities to close the game off but it didn’t go our way. But the guys stuck in there

“There was a lot of encouragement defensively, and in the middle, we did everything we could to win the game today, which was one of the most important things for me.”

Town were hit before the game with both Joe Hambley and Tom Curwen failing concussion checks and having to pull out.

Then, they were struck by injury just four minutes in as in-form prop Stevie Scholey left the field with a suspected broken thumb.

“Stevie is a big player for us so, to have him come off that early in the game when we were already two down because of the concussion situation, left us a bit light on the bench,” said Clark.

“But the spirit we have in the team is great, they find a way of getting over things and keep on going. Things like that will happen and it’s how you overcome it.

“Stevie went to hospital for an X-ray and it looks like a possible fracture to his thumb. I hope it isn’t and it’s just something minor and he can get back next week but we will see what happens.”
