After a rollercoaster week, Workington Town fan Joe Holliday says the club must win their final game of the season against Halifax on Sunday regardless of any drama at Sheffield.

Earlier this week crisis club Sheffield seemed to be on the verge of potentially folding due to not being able to find a new ground, which gave fans hope of a stay of execution.

But it transpired yesterday that Sheffield City Council has promised to work with an investor to build a new stadium for the Eagles.

With Sheffield’s future uncertain, rugby league historian Joe hopes Town can use the opportunity to finish above rivals Whitehaven as motivation to leave nothing to chance.

Joe said: “Somehow I feel that they’ll be rescued before the time comes but time will tell on that and there’s a little bit of hope there.

“If they do drop out it’s up to us to win.

“Irrespective of Sheffield, we’ll be wanting to win to top Whitehaven.

“There’s obviously a hope that if Sheffield have to go bust then we can be in the position to make the most of it.”

Last Sunday’s dramatic win over Bradford raised spirits and Joe believes, whatever happens to his beloved Town, the players have given everything this season for the cause.

“They have been coming very close all season,” he said.

“They should have beaten Bradford the last time they were down at Workington but a last-minute penalty threw the game away.

“That’s been the case in several games.

“It was a terrific result against Bradford and after the result the weekend before you couldn’t have imagined what the score was going to be but the lads played out of their skins.

“I think most of the fans who are attending the matches, they’ve all seen the lads have tried hard to do a job, they just haven’t got the final touches.”
