Workington Town's new crop of players had extra motivation when they got back to pre-season training this week - when two club legends popped in for a visit.

Paul Charlton and Eddie Bowman were special guests as new coach Dave Clark brought his players together for the start of training.

And they spoke of the pride in wearing the Workington Town jersey.

Full-back Charlton and forward Bowman both earned Great Britain call-ups while playing at Derwent Park.

Charlton had a long and spectacular career playing for Workington and Salford and earned 19 Great Britain caps.

He was a key player in Britain's World Cup winning squad of 1972 and became a British Lion when when he toured Australasia in 1974.

He captained Workington to four consecutive Lancashire Cup finals, between 1976-79, including the victory over Wigan in 1977.

Bowman was part of Town's 1977 Lancashire Cup winning side and that same year he was selected for the GB side for the World Cup in Australasia where he proved to be one of the stars of the series.

Associate director, Gary McKeating, said: "We had Paul and Eddie there for the first night of pre-season training with the team.

"And they told the lads what it means to pull on a Town shirt, the history and the passion.

"They said it was all about the heritage of the shirt and explained what it meant to them. It was a great opportunity."

The duo also helped Workington Town launch a new pre-Christmas fundraising drive, as they joined forces with the Workington Lifeboat.

The club is offering fans the chance to put their name on a stadium seat at Derwent Park.

The Name A Seat campaign means that for £40 fans can dedicate a seat to themselves, a loved one or in memory of someone special. And £5 from every sale will go towards the Shannon Lifeboat appeal.

Director Les Smallwood said: "Naming a seat is a very personal way to support Workington Town.

"Whether for you, a loved one or even a pet, your donation will help us develop the club and the team.

"We hope that fans will donate for a Christmas present. It’s an added bonus that part of the donation will help the town’s lifeboat appeal.

"The club is also naming a seat after all Workington Hall of Fame members and we were very proud to host Eddie Bowman and Paul Charlton earlier this week to present them with their named seats."

Anyone wanting to name a seat should contact the club office on 01900 603609.
