Workington Town chief Mark Fryer has warned that his team will need to be on top of their game when they host Batley Bulldogs in the first match of the Super 8s.

Town, who finished eighth in the Championship table, and with it picked up what could be a crucial fourth home game, welcome Batley Bulldogs to the Zebra Claims Stadium on Sunday for the first game of the Super 8s (3pm ko).

Workington were beaten home and away by Batley in the regular Championship season but Town are one of the in-form teams in the league at the moment.

The West Cumbrians have picked up three wins in their last three games against Whitehaven, London Broncos and Hunslet Hawks.

Vice-chairman Fryer said: “It’s a massive game for the club.

“We never underestimate anyone. Batley will be coming all guns firing. We have got to be on top of our game.”

Former chairman Dave Bowden praised the club for its progression in recent years and called on people in Workington to get behind the club as they look to secure a place in the Championship Shield play-offs.

He said: “I don’t think anyone is going to underestimate how far the team and club have come in the last couple of years, both on and off the pitch.

“The step up in intensity at this level is marked and the club has done the best job it can with the limited resources it has.

“I think the board and Phil Veivers have done a remarkable job.

“It really is time for the town to get behind the club because we are playing some great stuff.

“We are playing on Sunday against a team that traditionally does well at the end of the season. The challenge will be easier if people come and get behind us.”

Meanwhile, Workington Town’s Ladies Supporters Group is holding an afternoon tea event tomorrow at Harrington Legion.

The event starts at 3pm and runs until 8pm with a raffle, games, entertainment and karaoke. Tickets cost £15.
