Workington Town winger Brett Carter believes that the positive team spirit in the camp will be crucial when players start their pre-season preparations next week.

The Scotland international, who signed a new deal at Zebra Claims Stadium in September, said that the atmosphere at the club was the main reason behind him penning a new contract at Town and says he is looking forward to linking up with his team-mates again.

“Pre-season can feel like the slowest three months of your life,” Carter said.

“It’s awful when you’re out training and it’s cold and wet or even snowing.

“All the lads miss hanging out and training with each other and even when we’re getting flogged in pre-season we still try to have a laugh. You need that support from each other.

“It can be really tough when we start but everyone catches up pretty quickly and it’s important that we encourage each other.”

Carter made 18 appearances for Town last season, scoring 11 tries and is hoping to make his mark in the side in 2016.

“Pre-season is really tough and without games for the first few months it’s important that we get as fit as possible,” he continued.

“I thought last season was long enough but we started to play really well towards the end of the year.

“I’ve been looking after myself since the season ended. I’ve enjoyed my time off but I’m ready to get stuck into pre-season.”
