Departing Workington Town coach Phil Veivers admitted he would have liked to help rebuild the club next season.

The club’s board of directors announced on Sunday that, due to ‘financial constraints’, Veivers would not return as coach next term.

Veivers said he was disappointed to part company with the club but understood the reasons.

“You are always disappointed to move on but as one door closes another one opens, so they say,” said Veivers.

“I have had three good years at Workington and I was hoping to be there next year to try and rebuild, but finances will not allow it. Now it is time for a new chapter in my life.”

Veivers saw plenty of success with the Town side, making it to the play-offs in two successive seasons.

In 2015, he led Town to the Championship Shield semi-final.

But this year, Workington struggled with injuries and were relegated to League One.

“We made the play-offs twice but this year was disappointing,” he added.

“Probably the most outstanding year for the boys for bragging rights was beating Whitehaven five times last year. That was a big achievement for them but there have been some really good victories over the years.

“And we have often done it with our backs up against the wall.

“We beat Featherstone in my first year when we were absolutely busted and won against Bradford and Dewsbury this year.”

The Australian admitted he would keep a special place in his heart for Workington Town and the many friends he has made there.

“I have made plenty of friends in my time at Workington Town and I will keep in contact,” he added.

“I always like to see how the other teams I have been involved with are getting on and Workington is no different.”

Veivers is now looking for his next challenge after highlighting his availability through social media.
