Workington Town head coach Phil Veivers believes there are still areas his side can improve on despite their 62-0 hammering of Doncaster.

Town ran rampant, scoring 11 tries against the South Yorkshire side on Monday, but the Aussie believes that better sides could have punished them on the day.

“We were pretty good and scored some nice tries,” Veivers said. “I’m not taking anything away from the boys, you play what’s in front of you and they aimed up.

“The plaudits go to our guys but there are a few areas where we can improve.

“I think if we were up against a better side they could have punished us on the day.”

Town remain in fourth place in the Championship Shield table and are just five points behind third-placed London, who they travel to play on Sunday.

With just three games to play and an opportunity to overtake the Broncos in the table, Veivers says that he is only taking things week-by- week and not looking too far ahead.

“I’m not looking at the league table to be honest,” he said. “We’re going week- by-week and we’ve got London this week which we need to prepare for.

“Our main aim is to make the top four and we’re on course to do that.”

Veivers hopes that the club will be able to make further announcements on player retention later this week and believes that having a squad of 30 for next season is a realistic target.

“I know exactly what type of player I want to bring in,” he added.

“I’ve been open in saying that I don’t want to lose anyone and that hasn’t changed.

“There might be one or two that move on but that’s normal.

“We’ve got 27 in our squad at the moment with the late arrivals of Jarrod Sammut and Alex Szostak, who signed before the window shut.

“And then there are the guys who are on the long-term injury list.

“We had some senior players missing for the Doncaster game and the players that came in really put their hands up and staked their claim for a place in the team. I’m sure they will be called upon again before the end of the season.

“Whoever I want to bring into the team for next year has to be a fit both for me and for the environment at the club. We won’t want to sign anyone who would cause trouble.”
