WORKINGTON Town boss Phil Veivers was bitterly disappointed after his side got ‘burnt’ at the hands of Sheffield Eagles yesterday.

Town went down 42-12 in their opening Championship fixture with Veivers admitting that his side were ‘pretty average’ on the day.

Tries from Jamie Doran and Jack Murphy were not enough to halt the full time Eagles who overshadowed their home counterparts.

Veivers said after the match: “I thought we were pretty average in our performance. I don’t think Sheffield had to do a lot to beat us today.

“When you don’t control the rucks and the referee lets you lay on a bit then you’re going to get burnt and we got burnt today.

“They went through the middle on us which is a bit disappointing as we spoke about that all week but we had too many that didn’t put their hand up today.”

The wind was a factor in the clash but with Town 24-6 down at half time it was always going to be an uphill struggle to claw back the Sheffield lead.

Veivers added; “We said at half time if we could control field position and possession then we had a chance, an even share of the ball might assist as well but we didn’t get an even share of the ball.

“They had three sets more than us in the first half and six more in the second but that was our own undoing, penalties and errors kill you.”

Town did have their chances and created opportunities but couldn’t find a finishing touch that

“There are things we can work on but there are major things to work on defensively,” added Veivers.

“The 17 that rolled out there today were good enough to beat this Sheffield side and they didn’t stand up.”
