Workington Town head coach Phil Veivers wants to see an improvement from his side in Monday’s bank holiday fixture against Doncaster (3pm ko).

Although Doncaster have been relegated to League One with four games left to play, Veivers knows that he and his players can’t take anything for granted against a side which has steadily improved as the season has progressed.

Although Doncaster have won just one game all season, they pushed Batley and Featherstone in their last two fixtures.

“They have improved and brought in a lot of good players, and I think Gary Thornton has done a really good job,” Veivers said.

“I just want to see us improve on our performance last week.

“Our defence wasn’t up to scratch and we spoke about that in training on Tuesday night.

“We were slightly under par and that hurt us.

“There are no easy games in this league and the players know that.”

Town’s five-game winning streak was ended by Featherstone Rovers last weekend as they lost 24-10 at Zebra Claims Stadium.

They now sit just a point ahead of rivals Whitehaven in the race for a play-off place in the Championship Shield.

Several players picked up injuries and Veivers is expected to make changes for Monday’s game.

“Everyone was disappointed after the Featherstone game,” he continued. “We could have got a result out of that.

“There will be a few changes but we have an extra day for the players to get over some of their knocks and I’ll make my decision on the squad on Sunday.”
