Workington Town head coach Phil Veivers says there has been no focus on his side’s previous fixtures against this weekend’s opponents Featherstone Rovers ahead of their Championship Shield meeting tomorrow at Zebra Claims Stadium.

Town have been on the wrong end of 72-0 and 52-0 results against the Rovers so far this season but they are currently enjoying a five-game winning run.

Victory tomorrow would see them secure their Championship status for 2016, irrespective of Hunslet’s result against London Broncos.

“We’ve not spoken about proving a point on Sunday,” Veivers said.

“They have bragging rights over us at the moment but there are lots of areas where we want to break them down and we’ve worked hard on them in training.

“We’ll fine tune that in training today and hopefully we’ll be ready to go tomorrow.

“I’ve watched their last two games and the last two times we’ve played against them.

“Their results over the last couple of weeks are irrelevant.

“It’s a different game and it’s a new way for them to get back on track and into a winning mode.

“Even though they’ve won their last couple they have been scrappy wins.”

Veivers was critical of his side’s performance last weekend despite their 22-18 win over Hunslet but the Aussie said he had apologised to the team and praised their efforts in grinding out the win.

“I apologised to the players because I think I did them a disservice,” he said. “They defended phenomenally and we did enough to win the game.

“It’s two points we’ve put to bed and we’ve moved on.

“Training has been great and I wouldn’t expect anything else.

“We’ve trained really well over the last five weeks, the intensity has been very good and we’re very upbeat.”

Alex Szostak and Jack Murphy have returned to the 19-man squad after missing last weekend’s game and could go back into the starting line-up for tomorrow’s game.

Town’s 19-man squad: Akehurst, Carter, Coward, Doran, Forber, Forrester, McAvoy, Mossop, Miller, Murphy, Olstrom, B Phillips, C Phillips, Sammut, Shackley, Stack, Szostak, Walker, Whiteley
