Workington Town boss Phil Veivers says he had pride in the passion shown by his side during Sunday’s 30-6 win over Hunslet Hawks.

The result meant that Town finished in eighth place in the league, securing what could be a crucial additional home game in the Super 8s phase of the competition.

The Aussie took heart from his side’s performances throughout the season having finished just a place behind the full-time London Broncos in the regular season.

“It’s all right splashing the cash, but you have to play with passion, heart and desire and our boys did that on Sunday,” he said.

“We lacked a bit of enthusiasm in the first half, we started slow and I thought we were average.

“They kicked well and we invited them to play.

“It took until Jarrod [Sammut] took an intercept for anything to change and then the first time we went into their half of the field we scored.

“We didn’t spend enough time there. I thought we were a bit dumb in the second half but we scored enough points to win the game.”

Wingers Elliott Miller and Brett Carter both scored from set pieces, something that Veivers said he had pre-planned for Sunday’s game.

“We scored two tries from kicks off the training park and I’d identified that against Hunslet. Carter did his job in scoring two tries.

“Our performance took care of the result and we knew we had to win.”

Sammut scored an interception try and then set Miller up to help give Town a 12-6 lead at the break.

“He’s been good for us, you can’t play in the NRL if you can’t play rugby,” Veivers added. “We knew what we were getting when we signed him. He was brought in to do a job and he’s doing that for us at the moment.”
