Workington Town head coach Phil Veivers was less than impressed with his side’s performance in yesterday’s 22-18 win over Hunslet Hawks.

Town were 22-6 up at half-time but allowed the Hawks to come back to within four points.

Some dogged goal-line defending from Workington kept Hunslet out and, although the Town boss was unimpressed by his side’s performance, Veivers was pleased with the effort his squad showed in defence.

“I wasn’t happy with the performance but I’ll take the two points,” Veivers said. “There were some good parts and some atrocious parts.

“We were scrappy throughout and I don’t think our lead at half-time reflected the nature of the game. But you take your chances and we created a couple of tries.”

Brett Carter opened the scoring to put Town ahead before Danny Grimshaw hit back to give the home side the lead.

Scott Akehurst, Brett Phillips and Perry Whiteley each scored in the space of five minutes to give Town their 22-6 lead at the break.

Richie Barnett then scored two tries in the second half but Town held on for their fifth win in a row.

“Carter did well to score his try, Perry’s was straight off the training park and then we had a couple of kick tries,” Veivers continued.

“We were scrappy throughout the game.

“We came out and were enthused in the first 10 minutes but we stopped doing the enthusiastic stuff and it turned into a fight.

“Going into half-time at 22-6 we were comfortable and we spoke during the break about still wanting to play and finishing our sets on our terms but we didn’t make them work for their tries.

“They got an intercept but we thought he [Richie Barnett] dropped the ball over the line,” he added.

“That gave them a leg up and some belief.

“We were turning ball over in our half and giving away some stupid penalties towards the back end of the game which invited them into our 20-metre area.

“They had two or three sets on our try line but the guys showed some spirit and togetherness to defend our line as if their lives depended on it.

“Our defence had to show up because we gave them enough reasons to win the game.

“I’m pleased with the effort showed and roll on next week so we can put this one to bed.

“I’m just really happy to get the win. It’s two points and that’s probably sent Hunslet down but it keeps our fight up for fourth place.”
