Winger Sam Forrester is set to make his return to the professional game after signing a new deal with Workington Town.

The former Derwent Park favourite, who can also play at full-back, has had a season away from the game.

But the lure of working under new coach Leon Pryce, and the club’s vision for the future, has tempted him back into the fold.

Ex-Maryport amateur Forrester said he was looking forward to getting back in action and he wants to prove himself in the game.

He said: “I feel as though I have a bit of a gap to fill in my rugby career.

“When I was at the club last time, I couldn’t get a good run of games together and picked up a few niggly injures. So, I’m looking to rectify that.

“After talking to the board, and where they are looking to go with the club, I wanted to be part of it.

“I’m really excited to be working with Leon Pryce as he has achieved so much in the game and I’m looking forward to getting started in pre-season.”

Forrester played for two seasons at Derwent Park under then-coach Phil Veivers but opted to take the 2017 season off.

But he has an impressive pedigree in the amateur game, winning representative honours with the England Community Lions Under-18s and touring both South Africa and Lebanon.

He was selected for the BARLA open age squad that toured Australia and also toured with the BARLA under-23 side.

Town chairman Garry Mounsey admitted bringing Forrester back to the club has been a long-time goal and he is delighted he has decided to return.

“We’ve been talking to Sam for a while and have been trying to persuade him to return to semi-pro rugby league," he said.

“He is an unbelievable talent and was a miss at the club last season. So we’re delighted that we’ve finally persuaded him to re-sign.

“We always want to take the best local talent into the club and Sam fits the bill completely.”
