Highly-rated Wigan prospect Macauley Davies has joined Workington Town on a season-long loan - and is set to have a baptism of fire in this weekend's West Cumbrian derby.

The 6ft 2in, 15st forward joined the Derwent Park side this week and could go right into Town's side as they take on Haven on Sunday in the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy.

The 20-year-old has a first team squad number this season and is highly thought of at the DW Stadium.

A product of Wigan Academy, Davies has also represented England Academy and made his first team debut against Wakefield in 2016.

Town head coach Dave Clark is delighted to welcome Davies on board to bolster his pack, ready for the new League 1 season.

He said: "We’re putting together a team that is a nicely balanced mix of youth and experience.

"The common denominator is that all of our players are very talented and passionate about wearing the Workington Town shirt.

"Macauley is a fantastic addition to the squad. He is young, ambitious and will do great things in rugby league.

"He’s got the attitude that we want at Town and will fit in really well with our boys."

Davies is described by Wigan staff as skillful, athletic and powerful.

Wigan director of rugby Kris Radlinski, said: "Macauley is a player with massive potential. He will benefit from regular game time in what will be a very competitive league.

"We have a great long term relationship with Workington Town and know that they have a very professional set up on and off the pitch.

"The arrangement is of benefit to both clubs and we look forward to seeing him in action for Town."

Town will have Jamie Doran and Kris Coward back available for selection this weekend after they missed the trip to Huddersfield through work commitments.

Players with longer term injuries, including captain Jason Mossop, Alex Szostak and John Patrick will all be assessed this week as Clark looks to put together a strong side.

The coach also faces a tough decision over which, if any, trialists could be included ahead of what is anticipated to be a full-blooded derby.
