Workington Town boss Dave Clark praised the cool head of captain Carl Forber as his drop-goal sealed a narrow victory at Coventry Bears.

Workington had been leading the game 22-0 in the first half but the lead slipped to just 12 points by half-time.

And in the second half, Coventry continued to trouble their visitors and the scoreline was levelled at 28-28.

But going into the dying minutes, Town skipper Forber calmly slotted over a drop-goal and the Town defence held out to secure the win at 29-28 and stay in the top eight.

“This is the second time Carl has done this for us,” admitted Clark.

“It was a couple of minutes to go in the game and his experience stood us in good stead.

“He landed it and we went one point ahead but then we dropped the ball from kick-off and they had a full set, just missing their own drop-goal.

“So, it could have gone either way really but we just hung on in there. I’m not sure if we 100 per cent deserved it but we got it which is the important thing.”

Clark admitted that Coventry gave them a hard time and they had to really pull together to get the win.

He said: “The first 20 minutes we played some good footy and we had the momentum but the tide turned pretty quickly.

“They got two tries late in the first half so we spoke at half-time and said to keep doing the things we do right and do the little things better.

“Coventry had the momentum and they had a lot of enthusiasm and we couldn’t stop that.

“But we soldiered on and, at the end of the day, we went with an objective to win and we did that. But we all know that we could have done better.

“We were a little bit disappointed but it is a positive that we got the win.”

Town will now look ahead to next Sunday and the visit of London Skolars to Derwent Park in another crucial game as they look to stay in the top eight.
