It's do-or-die for Workington Town in the final three games of the League One season, admitted the club’s director of rugby Les Ashe.

Town have three games before the mid-season break, where the league splits into two halves and Workington have made no bones about the fact they want to be in the top eight.

But they face a tough run-in, with home games against London Skolars and Keighley Cougars, followed by a trip to York City Knights.

“Our season now rests on these last few games and it is what it is,” said Ashe.

“I think we probably need to win at least two of the last three games after looking at other teams’ fixtures.

“It is in our own hands because our next two games are at home but it is still a difficult run-in.

“Our stall was always set out to get a top eight finish and that remains our target.

“I know that the teams around us will have the same targets and they will be keeping a close eye on us but we have to stay positive.”

Town’s first opponents on Sunday, London, will head to Derwent Park on the back of a good performance against third-placed Barrow last weekend. Barrow won the game 20-10 but there were just four points in it at half time.

And Ashe said people don’t realise just how tough this league can be.

He added: “I read the London Skolars report against Barrow and it sounds like they put up a really good show against them.

"The conditions were warm but both sides have to deal with that and it is testament to what this league is. People seem to write it off as a league of two halves but that isn’t quite true.”

Sunday’s clash with London Skolars kicks off at 3pm.
