Workington Town need to tighten up defensively to register a second victory over Gloucestershire All Golds tomorrow, says director of rugby Les Ashe.

Town have not leaked many points in their opening League One fixtures but the All Golds claimed 22 points at Derwent Park last Sunday.

But Ashe says that, if Town can replicate the form that saw them run in four late tries and keep Gloucestershire from replying, then they should reach the iPro Sports League One Cup semi-finals.

“Defensively, we were okay but we haven’t been conceding a lot of points, so to concede 22 on Sunday was probably a bit disappointing for the players and the coaching staff,” said Ashe.

“But, if we can rectify that and play to the level and standard we produced in the last 10/15 minutes of the last game, we stand a good chance of progressing in the cup.”

And he admitted that playing them twice in seven days allows Town to get a real handle on their opponents.

“We did a bit of guesswork on them last week as we haven’t come across them before,” admitted Ashe.

“We knew they would be tough after looking at previous results but the proof was there in action. They were everything we expected and a bit more.

“They kept going and never dropped their heads, just kept chipping away. They are a very competitive side.”

Town emerged from last weekend’s win virtually unscathed and coach Dave Clark had around 20 players to choose from, with the only exceptions being longer term injuries.

The draw for the semi-final of the 2017 League One Cup will take place on Monday, from 12.30pm.

Broadcast live on the Rugby Football League Facebook Page, England assistant coach Paul Anderson will be joined by BBC rugby league correspondent Dave Woods to conduct the draw. You can watch at www.facebook.com/rugbyfootballleague/
