Blockbusting forward Stevie Scholey will prop up the Workington Town pack for the next two years after signing a new deal.

Scholey, who has been one of Town's star performers this term, has committed his future to the Derwent Park club until the end of 2019.

And the 27-year-old believes he can only get better as he continues to learn his trade.

"I think I have finally found my feet at Workington," said the former Maryport amateur.

"I'm getting to know all the lads that play around me which is making me play better.

"I think I can only get better as long as I stay clear of injuries. I know 100 per cent I can improve, there are just little things I can pick up on myself.

"I've learned a lot from some of the other players, like Callum and Brett Phillips, Kris Coward and Alex Szostak.

"They have all helped me, even with little things in training, like doing things differently in tackles and talking a lot more."

Scholey has high hopes for next season, although he says they are still in the mix for the League 1 play-offs this year.

He added: "I've been really happy with my personal performances this season although I think we could have done a bit better in the league.

"But it has been a learning curve from where we were at the start of the season, with the amount of players we had signed on and new amateur lads that came in. So really we have done well to finish in the Super 8s.

"Hopefully we can finish further up the table next year although nothing is written off this year yet.

"We know it will be tough but we will look to win our last three games and see what happens."

Town director, John Walker, was delighted Scholey has chosen to stay, as they look to build a mainly Cumbrian side.

He said: "Stevie has been a fantastic player for us since he joined from Maryport for the 2015 season.

"He trains hard and is great to have around the club on and off the pitch. When he plays he gets through a phenomenal amount of work in attack and defence.

"He’s had a great 2017 season and we were very eager to re-sign him as we continue our planning for the next few seasons.

"He is a local lad and Town through and through and we’re trying to build a Cumbrian team as much as possible.

"Stevie is a big contributor to those plans and everyone at the club is delighted that he’s re-signed."
