Workington Town put up a good fight but ultimately went under at the hands of York City Knights.

Town ran their hosts close on occasion but could not find the killer blow to get in front, losing 28-18.

Phil Lister bagged Town's opening try, with Carl Forber's conversion levelling matters at 6-6 in the opening stages.

York pulled away to lead 18-6 at half time but into the second period and Macauley Davies touched down, with the try converted to bring Town back into the game at 18-12.

But it was the hosts who extended their advantage again before Joe Hambley sneaked in with a late try, converted by Forber, to make the full time score 28-18.

Town boss Dave Clark was disappointed not to have got something out of the game but pleased to see an improved performance from his side.

"We had a lot more positives in this game than the last time we were here," said Clark.

"I think the boys can take a lot of confidence from this performance. We probably gave them some tries, I don't think they were as well earned as they have been previously.

"From our point of view, we asked for a reaction in the second half and we won the second half 12-10.

"The two tries they got were gifted to them from us, with our mentality and gifting them the ball.

"But we only had two middles on the bench and Stuart Howarth couldn't come back on after 20 so some of those boys played a lot of minutes. That was really encouraging and I thank them for that."

Town will now welcome Doncaster at home next weekend, after they beat Haven 30-22.

"I hope we can kick on from today and get a win," added Clark. "If we cut out those little errors we will be a threat in these last four games and they are all winnable.

"It is up to us to see how we perform."
