Workington Town star of the 1960s Ray Glastonbury is heading back to Derwent Park for another taste of derby action.

The winger, who racked up 133 tries in his 206 appearances, is travelling up from his home in Wales in April and will be taking in the Good Friday derby against Whitehaven.

Town are appealing for anyone who played with Ray in his time at the club from 1962 to 1968 to get in touch and come along to the match and meet up with their former team-mate.

Workington associate director Gary McKeating said: “Ray’s daughter Janine approached the club to say that he was visiting from Wales, and was coming to the Whitehaven derby. So, could we help trace some of his old team-mates.

“At Town, we’re big believers in heritage and celebrating those that have pulled on a Town jersey.

“We decided to invite Ray and any team-mates we could contact as guests of the club.

“We’ll give them a bite to eat and make a fuss of them as Town greats and I hope he has a fantastic time with us on the day.

“We certainly appreciate the fact that he still holds the club in great esteem – we want to show as a club that we appreciate all of our ex-players.”

Ray’s rugby career started in the other code, playing rugby union for Cardiff. Then, national service took him into the RAF who he represented, and also played for, the Combined Services side.

He joined Town for the start of the season in 1962 and quickly made the right-wing his home, picking up five tries on his home debut against Rochdale Hornets.

Ray has stayed in touch with a couple of his former team-mates, including John ‘Spanky’ McFarlane but he would love to see more on his return to Workington.
