Workington Town have swooped back into the amateur ranks to snap up highly-rated dual code star Gordon Maudling.

The 26-year-old has been plying his trade for St Benedict's in the union code and Hensingham in rugby league.

He is renowned as a hard running forward with a great work rate and Town are believed to have fought off local competition for his signature.

Town director of rugby, Les Ashe said: "Gordon is a great signing for us. He is a big, powerful and skillful player who can play anywhere in the pack.

"We’ve been watching him for a while and I’m delighted that he’s agreed to sign for us as I know there was strong interest from elsewhere.

"As a club we’re looking to sign the best local players and signings like Gordon are a part of our long term strategy to restructure the club not just for this season but for the future."

Ashe said he was looking forward to Maudling running out in the Town colours.

He added: "We have a long term structured plan on and off the field and commitment and pride in pulling on the Workington shirt is a big part of our club and team ethos.

"I’m glad that Gordon has bought into what we’re planning as a club and I can’t wait to see him play in the blue and white."

Maudling's brother Kurt signed in the close season for Whitehaven and it is believed Haven were also attempting to lure him to the Recreation Ground but Town were quick to secure their man.

And he is keen to take the next step forward in his rugby career.

Maudling said: "I can’t wait to get started with Town. Les talked about the plans for the club and I was impressed by what the club is trying to do.

"I’m looking forward to meeting up with the squad and getting started in my professional career.

"I’d also like to thank my coaches and team mates at Bennies and Hensingham for all of the help and advice they’ve given me."
