Workington Town vice-chairman Mark Fryer says the club might be down but they are certainly not out.

Town were relegated from the Kingstone Press Championship following their heavy defeat at the hands of Sheffield Eagles on Sunday.

But Fryer says they will be going all out to bounce back at the first attempt.

“We are all devastated and I know the fans are as well,” said Fryer.

“But I have been cheered by some of the messages of support from fans.

“They are all keen for us to pick up and get on with the task ahead, which is building for next year.

"We do recognise this has been a poor season but now we have to start the rebuilding process.

“We have to make sure we can compete next year in that division and try and get out of it at the first attempt.”

Fryer admitted this would not be an easy process and he said one of the first tasks would be trying to retain some of their players.

He added: “It will be tough, there is no doubt about that. We will face some long journeys and also a trip to Canada.

“We have done it before and we have no doubt that we can do it again.”

Fryer also paid tribute to the injured players who took to the field against Sheffield to ensure Town had a team to complete the fixture.

“We took to the field with seven players, who under any other circumstances would not have played,” he said.

“We were beaten up and broken. Our injury problems have been well documented but that result was not for a lack of trying.

“It will be hard to get up and play another game this week but that’s what we have to do.

“We just ask that the fans get behind the lads.”
