Calls for Workington to host rugby World Cup

West Cumbria’s dream to host Rugby League World Cup matches have been shattered after Copeland council pulled the plug on its bid this week.

Have your say

Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap....all TALK, and everything on the CHEAP. That about sums up the people of the West Coast....if Sellafield isn't involved it becomes a no go. When it comes to the crunch the council get involved and the whole thing is "Kyboshed". Maybe a good thing the games will be staged elsewhere, as why would we want visitors coming to see 2 bit cowboy towns of Whitehaven or Workington. We are back in the middle ages with this council trying to organise/spend money hand over fist with nothing to show apart from an empty pot. If we want to succeed the 60 % who don't vote need to do so and get these amatuers out and professionals in to get the show on the road. A change is as good as a rest, and by god we rapidly need a change.

I have read "online" the Whitehaven News for the last decade or so. Every week I cast my vote as a NO to the almalgamtion with town.. No more.. waken up.. The powers of Yorkshire and Lancashire never wanted success in Cumbria, both on the paddock and in the pit.. I say, bury the hatchet, get together, either on the new ground, or even Borough Park..
Australia rejected Super League and in turn, merged clubs (rivals) and made the game stronger..

Cant see the RFL wanting games at Derwent Park or the Recre, if you look at the list of all other venues they are pretty smart grounds, they wont want TV cameras showing derwent park, warts and all. I think i read somewhere that the RFL have a contingency in place...if Dave Bowden doesnt know about that contingency plan then I doubt he's apart of it.

Actually, it might be feasible for the games to be played at either Derwent Park or the Recre.

Other than here and Australia/New Zealand, Rugby League is a fairly minority sport. Some other countries show an interest, and that interest may be growing, but it's a minority sport when all's said and done.

Fair play to the organisers for trying to cajole the bidders to provide a new (and therefore smart looking for the cameras) stadium but realistically, a large venue isn't needed, especially for the group games that were alocated to the proposed new stadium. Despite what's been said in all the recent bout of political points-scoring quotes, the games aren't really all that prestigious.

West Cumbria had a chance, if Rugby League does get bigger and bigger over the years, to have a place in the footnotes of the game's history with the hosting of these games. It's no more than that however, and arguably not something that millions of pounds should have been spent on chasing.

I think Derwent Park should put a cheeky bid in for these games. The ground is probably good enough, to be honest.

Why not just go one better than that and try persuade CUFC to let them use Brunton Park would make sense and would allow the games to stay in Cumbria

Thanks Whitehaven and CBC. They were always going to mess it up given their track record and have now possibly gifted it to Workington. We have nothing to lose by having a go at getting it played at Workington. At least the RFL wont be dealing with amateurs like at Copeland.

why not just play it at the recreation ground if the stadium isnt a option and keep it in whitehaven, derwent park isnt a better venue than the recreation ground now is it?
