Shouldn't the MP be supporting or giving some more spin for the the Council instead distancing himself? The Council have made a difficult decision and must feel let down by the comments in this article.

I cant understand why if a new stadium will result in a super rugby leage team why not develop the football team into a premier leage outfit? Just imagine Whitehaven v Manchester United. Cumbria may produce good players who go on to play for clubs in Lancashire and Yorkshire but two little towns will never provide the gate income that will support a super league side. The whole thing is a pipe dream supported by people who have something to gain from a council who hope a stadium would keep them in employment to a nuclear industry which hopes to sweeten the population and allow them to treat the area as a dump.
The only people to blame are the council who failed to oversee the development. They have people in planning departments and solicitors who should have seen this outcome and planned for it from the beginning. As the Labour MP says, as he quickly puts space between himself and the Labour council, the whole thing has been an amaturish fiasco.

its me again yes miners should be compensated but not to the point where they put the whole stadium project at risk just for their own gains they should be thinking about the town too.

I have no axe to grind with the council leaders, I'm sure they do the best they can in the position they're in. But they're is something wrong in Copeland with the way redevelopment is carried out, there is a constant drip-drip of bad news and disappointments. All of the big developments that we read about and which make us start to think that the area might finally start to improve never ever seem to materialise. I don't know if its the council leadership or one of the other groups that are always mentioned in relation to these grand shcemes, but something somewhere is rotten!

Surely the Whitehaven Miners have the right to compensation for use of their assets just like anyone else has. The Whitehaven Miners members interests will be their first priority. Maybe this should have all been sorted out initially in the consultation stage. It appears to be another case of closing the stable door once the horse has bolted, emotional blackmail and shifting the blame.

If Brian Birkett is correct can he publish the list of clarifications that were put to the council, and the council explain why they did not respond to them, only transparency will allow anyone to make their mind up on this whole sordid affair, have the courage to back your denial!!

As should the council and all involved in this affair. This was a great chance to showcase the area and greed and inefficiency has taken over and won the day. There should be accountability and heads should role and there should be an enquiry into what happened. The miner warfare should publish their list of minor demands.......now that would be interesting to see. Ultimately they are hoisted by their own petard, tough!

To be truthful Whitehaven Rugby League team are not very good and not a lot of people go to see them. So why oh why are millions being spent on this white elephant that they probably won't be able to afford to maintain once it's up. Surely the team should be doing well before any investment is made. Seems to me that they have it completely the wrong way around.

as for the council they should have been sacked when they let that store go to workington. when it comes to any big job there not up to it and over this should hang there heads in shame
