Wife pays tribute to West Cumbria floods hero Bill Barker

The wife of hero floods policeman Bill Barker told how the week since her husband died had been the worst days of her family’s lives.

In a statement issued after his funeral, she said: “We have to come to terms with losing a wonderful husband and a devoted father to our four children.

“Bill was my best friend, my forever friend. We were all so very proud of him.

“He was a committed man and put his heart and soul into everything he did, especially family life.

“Our lives will never be the same without him.

“Bill was a police officer for 25 years, most of his service spent serving on the roads policing unit, a job he was passionate about and loved dearly.

“He took great pride in his role as a family liaison officer, helping others to cope through such tragedies as the one we are having to cope with today.

“He always put 110 per cent into his work but even when he came home exhausted, he would always make sure he had time for me and the kids.

“He had many hobbies but his greatest passions in life were his family, his friends and his motorbikes. Bill had many biker friends and loved nothing more than to take to the open road.”

Mrs Barker added that the family had been overwhelmed by the support, messages of condolence and tributes they had received.

“It is so comforting to know that Bill touched the lives of so many and you only have to look around you today to see how much of an impact Bill’s death has had,” she said.

Chief Constable Craig Mackey, speaking after the funeral, said yesterday was “all about Bill and his family”, describing it as “ a very sad day”.

He added: “Cumbria Constabulary has lost a dedicated and committed officer, who spent 25 years of his life serving the communities of Cumbria.

“As a family liaison officer, Bill dealt with families who had experienced loss. It is now our job to do that for Bill’s family.

“Bill was clearly more than just a police officer, and the thoughts of everyone in the constabulary are with Hazel, his four children and his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Cumbria Police Authority chairman Ray Cole had worked with PC Barker when he was serving officers.

He said: “It was a privilege, a pleasure and an honour to work with Bill Barker.

“Bill was an ambassador for the constabulary and will be greatly missed by all.”

Mr Cole went on to congratulate police on how the had handled the fall-out from the floods.
