Workington Comets manager hails team spirit

Spirit in the Workington Comets camp is at an all time high following the team’s superb win at Ipswich last week.
The Comets took the maximum four points off Ipswich by beating them 51-39 at Foxhall to make up for the disappointing draw to Glasgow the week before.
It was that 45-45 result that team manager Tony Jackson believed led to the stunning performance at Ipswich.
He said: “The team spirit is absolutely off the scale at the moment and I think the result at Glasgow spurred us on.
“At Ipswich we had a talk after heat 12 saying this time we are not going to throw it away and we actually extended the lead.
“It was one of the best nights and I said to the guys if you enjoyed this lets do it again. We have got the feeling gong again and if we can win at Ipswich we can win anywhere.”
The Ipswich match saw Kyle Howarth return to the Comets team following his injury lay off and he put in a sterling performance at reserve.
Jackson said it made a massive difference and that it was good riding as a seven man team again with everybody chipping in and Rene Bach producing a 15 point maximum.
Jackson said: “Rene [pictured] was magnificent, Kenny scored points and Adam was back at the place where he broke his femur last year.
“Towards the end of the meeting he looked more like his old self but he got that win in heat 14 which cleared the memory and it was also the fastest time of the night.
“We are all doing OK but if everybody is clicking one team is going to get a hiding.”
Despite the Ipswich win the season still feels very fragmented as Saturday’s home match with Glasgow was washed out due to torrential rain. It means a busy July and August for the Comets with them racing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday over some weekends.
This Saturday they face current Premier League leaders Newcastle at Derwent Park - a meeting Jackson expects to be a tough one.
