Workington Reds slumped to a 17-year low, losing 6-1 at home to Bradford Park Avenue.

The devastating defeat was the worst since Radcliffe Borough fired six at Borough Park in 1995, and the heaviest loss for seven years.

Level at half time, Bradford ran riot after the break, scoring five goals in a hellish second half for Darren Edmondson’s players.

The only positive from the thrashing was Jonny Wright’s stunning volley to equalise on 20 minutes.

Striker Wright timed his fierce shot to perfection, slamming past former Barrow shot-stopper Tim Deasy from an acute angle.

Edmondson didn’t make a substitution, and said: “It’s never easy to lose, and when it’s as heavy as that, it’s awful.

“I was limited to the changes I could make. I had a goalkeeper, two defenders, a half-fit striker in Jordan Connerton, who has a hernia, and Anthony Wright.

“I would have done those boys no favours putting them on. It wouldn’t have changed anything, because the game was already gone.”

It was 1-1 at half time, but 36 seconds after the restart, Bradford began their scoring spree. By 66 minutes the game was over as a contest as the visitors built a two-goal lead.

Two goals inside the final five minutes ensured Workington remain 11th, but with the worst goal difference in the Blue Square Bet North’s top 17.

Edmondson confirmed that his entire first team would have been on duty for tomorrow night’s Cumberland Cup match with Penrith, if it had not been rained off again.

The game had been switched to Borough Park after failed attempts to get the game played at Penrith.
