Workington Reds keeper Tony Caig nominated for top award

Veteran shot stopper Tony Caig’s inspirational performances this season for Workington Reds have seen him nominated for non-league football’s goalkeeper of the year.

The 36-year-old has conceded just 36 goals in the 38 games he’s played in the league this year, keeping 12 clean sheets in the process.

That record has seen Caig be nominated for the Non-League Paper’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

His form between the sticks has lead the Borough Park club to the best defensive record this term and he’s not done yet.

He said: “I didn’t come to Workington to end up mid-table. I believed in this squad and what Darren Edmondson and Viv Busby are trying to do here.

“We didn’t start very well but I knew this side had the ability to do better. We have shown that and now we are in with a real chance of getting promotion.

“We don’t fear anyone and we know that we can win every time we play.

“There is a belief and a great spirit in the team and even when we go a goal down we believe we will win the game.

“I am delighted to be nominated and I accept the award on behalf of the hard work all the lads have put in this year.

“The defence has been solid and I think I have done well.

“I am contracted for another year and no matter what league we are playing in I will be here to try and improve on what we have achieved this time round.”
