Workington Reds go into their second league game at Chester tonight having bolstered their ranks.

Versatile defender Will Vaulks, 18, has signed on a one month loan deal from Tranmere Rovers, who last night thrashed Carlisle United 3-0 at Brunton Park.

And Reds are also hopeful of bringing in Carlisle attacking midfielder Josh Todd in time to play tonight.

Vaulks can operate across the back four and also as a holding midfielder, and it was this flexibility which boss Darren Edmondson found appealing.

He said: “He is a good footballer and can play a variety of positions, which is ideal.”

Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore said: “This is a good chance for Will to play some regular first team football.

“He spent time at Cammell Laird last season and this is another step up for him.

“Hopefully he will make the most of his time at Workington and come back to us with a few games under his belt and more experience of competitive football.”

Edmondson also revealed that he is trying to sign Todd before the trip to Chester but if not, a deal should be in place by the weekend.

Fresh faces coming into the squad will be sure to give the team a boost ahead of tonight’s match with Blue Square Bet North newcomers Chester FC.

Edmondson said that confidence is high in the camp following the outstanding 4-1 opening day win over Stalybridge Celtic. He said: “As you would expect confidence is really, really good.

“The players were buzzing in training on Monday.”

But he is anticipating a tough encounter tonight. He said that Chester FC is a club on the up and they have made a lot of signings in pre-season.

He added that playing in front of a potential crowd of 3,000 fans at the Deva Stadium will be “brilliant” for his players.

He said tonight’s game will come too soon for striker Jordan Connerton, who is suffering from an ankle injury, but he has pencilled in a possible return for Monday’s home game against Guiseley.
