Workington Town promoted after Whitehaven beat Rochdale

Workington Town are celebrating promotion to the Co-operative Championship.
And they didn’t even have to kick a ball yesterday to achieve it.
Whitehaven’s 31-12 victory at fifth-placed Rochdale means that the Lancastrians cannot now catch third-placed Town.
Town have a 13-point advantage over Rochdale with four games remaining.
“Mission accomplished,” said Town chairman Dave Bowden after hearing the Haven result. “Any team in the division would have been happy with promotion had they been asked at the start of the season.
“We’ve got the points on the board and we’re up – that’s all the matters to me.
“There are still four games to go and there will be a lot of twists and turns yet. We’re all absolutely fired up for the remaining games.”
Town joint coach Gary Charlton was also delighted, and said: “You would always like to win a game to go up but we already had the points – promotion was just a matter of time.
“We’ve now got to pick ourselves up for the trip to Gateshead next Sunday. I know the lads will want to put in a performance after the disappointing defeat at Doncaster last Thursday. I thought our defence was good but I was frustrated with our attack.
“The league season is far from over and we want to win all four remaining games. If we can’t win the league, we want to be as high as we can get.
“And we want to get back to the play-off final and make up for last year’s defeat in the final.”
