Workington travel services back to pre-flood timings after bridge opening

Travel services will return to their pre-flood timetables when Workington’s new temporary road bridge opens.

From next Wednesday, buses will not go down to Barker Crossing, but school buses will remain the same until the end of this school year.

At a meeting last night about post-flood transport issues, Geoff Holden, county council highways budget manager, also pledged they would keep the temporary road bridge in place until they were back to the pre-flood position of having two permanent road bridges.

“We are planning to keep Barker Crossing open until Navvies bridge is reopened but the Army have reserved the right to come and take that bridge away if it is needed more urgently elsewhere,” he said.

He said that the council had a funding package assembled and a design on the way for Navvies Bridge, which carries a footpath and cycle path from Workington to Northside. It should be open by the end of the year.

The council hopes to have a replacement for Northside Bridge open within two years.

Although the council can still not say for definite whether Calva Bridge will be repaired, it said that a decision was “imminent” and that if it could be repaired the timescale to reopen it would be much shorter than that of the collapsed Northside Bridge.

Mr Holden said the repair of Calva Bridge, also known as Workington Bridge, is likely to be months away if it goes ahead.

He added: “I cannot stress enough the risks with repairing this bridge as it could collapse and then we would have to demolish it and start again.”

The proposed traffic management schemes were discussed at the meeting by the council's area engineer for Allerdale Andrew Butler, who said that they will be monitored closely and removed if not needed.

He added that a toucan crossing would be put in place by the train station in the next week or so to aid pedestrians crossing from the station onto Station Road.
