Do you recall a television programme asking the public to vote for Britain's favourite view? The winner was Wastwater and it's the view that John and Elaine Meeks wake up to every day.

"We have it from nearly every room," John said. "It’s just gorgeous and will be hard to say goodbye to."

The couple have lived in Newthwaite, their detached dormer bungalow in Wasdale, for 34 years.

"When we moved here it was approaching dereliction. The owner had died, it had been neglected and the garden was very overgrown but we could see the potential because of the views down the Wasdale Valley," he said.

"Scafell Pike and Scafell are right ahead of us. It’s absolutely fabulous place with two acres of woodland and at least an acre of garden."

John and Elaine have poured love, time and hard work into Newthwaite, doing a total rebuild in the house, taking all the rooms back to bare brick, putting on a new slate roof and replacing windows.

"I effectively built a wall around the house and it's now a lot warmer and much more energy efficient," John said. "We have a biomass system - a pellet boiler which keeps the place absolutely roasting - and a full array of solar panels so we have virtually free electricity and free heating because of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) money.

"We also have beautiful free Wasdale water from a tube well in the garden although there is a mains connection too, and the woodland provides logs for the logburner."

The house has two reception rooms, a ground-floor shower room, conservatory and kitchen.

John loves this room: "The kitchen is still magnificent," he said. "It is custom-built and was put in by Laurence Langley of Carlisle. He did a marvellous job and also put in oak panelling throughout the hall and made nearly all the new doors.

"We've carried out work to all the rooms in the house, clearing upstairs and reconfiguring the space.

"The house was built over a number of years by an electrician working on building the-then Calder Hall Power Station (now Sellafield). He started building in 1948.

"We’ve extended the house quite a bit to the south, making the sitting room twice the size with a bedroom and bathroom upstairs 10 years ago. The conservatory was put on around 20 years ago.

"I think Elaine would say the conservatory is our favourite room in the house as one can sit there, overlooking the magnificent garden and up the valley.

"There are a lot of rhododendrons, camellias and azalias in the garden and it's spectacular at this time of year. We also have wisteria on the south end of the house and Virginia creeper on the other end."

There are four double bedrooms, one on the ground floor and the remainder upstairs. The dual-aspect master bedroom has stunning fell views and a four-piece en-suite and the family bathroom includes a corner shower cubicle, bidet and underfloor heating.

A fifth bedroom with en-suite bathroom is above one of the garages and was used as a granny flat for John's mother.

"I’m into vintage cars and we have garaging for five or six vehicles with a big garage cum workshop," he said.

"I think this house would attract someone who loves how quiet it is compared to the rest of the Lake District, someone who is interested in gardening, who has dogs.

"The dog walking around here is magnificent. We have our three acres to run the dogs in and the local farmers are wonderful and let us run the dog in their fields if there are no sheep there. We can walk for miles without getting the car out.

"Nether Wasdale village is delightful with two pubs, a micro brewery and lots going on. It’s going to be a terrible wrench to move."
