A Cockermouth guesthouse owner who had to cook one of her signature dishes in front of a panel of judges - including a celebrity chef - has won the Tastiest Breakfast Award.

Janette and Andrew Likeman were delighted when their business, Graysonside Guest House, on Lorton Road, won the much-coveted prize at a glitzy hospitality awards ceremony in London.

More than 200 people from all over the UK were at the Mayfair event staged by online hospitality booking system eviivo.

Janette had entered the competition and sent some photos of her breakfasts. She made it onto a shortlist of 10 who were all invited to London to cook their breakfast in front of a panel of judges, including television chef Phil Vickery.

Her fish dish was inspired by a family tragedy 38 years ago, when her brother, uncle and brother-in-law died at sea off Maryport.

She has always felt that fishermen and the industry do not get the recognition they deserve.

"I did smoked haddock, poached egg, buttered wilted spinach and sourdough croutons," said Janette.

"I love using local produce and showing what we can create.

"Although it was scary to cook in front of the judges."

But she clearly impressed them, and along with two other finalists, was invited to the awards evening.

"It was great, one of the most fantastic events we have been to," said Janette, who was accompanied by Andrew.

"To win was absolutely wonderful. We were the only Cumbrians there and were so pleased to put Cockermouth on the map."

The tragedy which inspired Janette's dish involved three members of her family.

"They had a little trawler boat which they enjoyed going out on when they had time off, they would then sell their catch," said Janette.

But one May day 38 years ago they never came back.

"Their bodies came back but they never found the boat," said Janette.

"The fishing industry does not get the recognition and respect it deserves for what they do. There's a lot to be said for that piece of fish."
