Workington town council staff will support their new mayor by taking part in the second Festival of Running on Sunday for her chosen charity.

Councillor Ann Bales, who was named mayor last month, chose the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as her charity and a team of staff will run the 5k in the event to help her fund-raise.

She said: "I am delighted that staff will be not only raising money for my charity but taking part in a great community event in Workington."

The team will consist of town clerk Chris Bagshaw, assistant town clerk Amelia Donnelly, events officer Amy Johnson, events assistant Emma Chapman, estate team leader Alison Saxby, senior estate worker Joe Copsey and estate worker Joe Fletcher and has set a £300 target.

Amy Johnson, town council events officer, said: "We're always looking for new ways to support the mayor's charity and this was a really nice way to do that."

The festival will feature 1km, 5km and 10km races, along with a host of free activities for children including arts and crafts, fairground rides and face painting.

The full event will run between 10am and 3pm, with children's arts and crafts, face painting, fairground rides and food stalls among the attractions.

Marie Whitehead, director at CN Events said: "We are once again delighted to be bringing the Festival of Running to Workington and it's great to be working in partnership with Allerdale borough council and Cumberland AC.

"The event will have something for everyone, from a 1k in fancy dress to trying for your 10k personal best.

"It will be a great, healthy family day out with loads of free activities."

Entries are open now for the event, with prices of £3 for the 1km, £7 for the 5km and £7 for the 10km.
