KESWICK School celebrated the achievements of its pupils at its annual prizegiving evening.

Dozens of youngsters picked up trophies for everything from their work in lessons to sporting achievements and contributions to performing arts.

Simon Jackson, headteacher, said: "Focusing single-mindedly on exam results doesn't make a school outstanding, and league tables make no attempt to measure qualities such as character, self-confidence and creativity.

"We believe that to be outstanding requires a bigger, more courageous vision. It means doing what's right for our students, encouraging curiosity and creativity, providing opportunities to grow in confidence and to take responsibility, and liberating teachers to teach and inspire their students.

"As a consequence, our vision for a 'Keswick School education' is to promote excellence to enable all our students to be happy and achieve their potential."

Guest speaker was climber Sir Chris Bonington.

Mr Jackson said: "Inspiration comes from what someone says or does. Forty years ago our guest speaker inspired a nation with the first British ascent of Mount Everest.

"Courage is to think that no matter how big the obstacle it can be overcome. The key to success is good preparation and perseverance.

"Well done on your success and especially your effort. Have the courage to lift up your eyes and make decisions based upon good advice and what you believe to be right."
