A Flimby man and his dog have raised £1,000 for a mum with incurable cancer by walking 35 miles between Carlisle and Workington.

Paul Hoskin was part of a group which walked between the train stations in each place for Susan Rumney, who has been diagnosed with cervical cancer and is raising money to pay for her wedding and her funeral.

Paul, 37, (and his lurcher Arlo) was the only person to reach the end of the route in horrendous weather – but after raising nearly £1,000 he said he would do it again.

He said: “The last two hours were hell but I’m proud that I completed it because I’ve raised money for a family in need.

“I think we started at 8.30am and I finished at 10pm.”

Paul is friends with Jay Clark, Susan’s partner, which led to him signing up for the walk being organised by another friend, Kevin Atkinson.

“Jay is one of my friends and when I lost my father to cancer he was at his funeral,” he said.

As well as Arlo, Paul was also helped on the trek by his sister Lynsey Turpin and friend Karl Langley.

n A late-night walk will be held to raise money for Susan next Friday. The group will set off from Opera Bingo in Workington at 10pm and walk to the shops at Moorclose.
