A FORMER soldier is ensuring that the old and disabled get to join in remembering the fallen on Sunday.

Maryport taxi owner Daniel Winthrop, 25, will transport any veterans to the Maryport Remembrance parade for £1and all proceeds from the day, including drivers' wages, will be given to the Poppy Appeal.

Daniel joined the army when he was 16 and did a tour of in Afghanistan.

He left last February to return to Maryport to be with his partner Alyson and their two-year-old daughter Aviary, although he still serves in the Reserves.

Since leaving full-time soldiering last February, Daniel has bought a taxi company, Maryport Travel.

"I wanted to do something for Remembrance Day - especially this one because it is 100 years since the end of the first world war.

"I was lucky. I have returned home with no injuries and all my limbs. But I know soldiers who have been injured and I know how the Poppy Appeal helps and I wanted to do my bit."

He said although the work of the appeal is well-known her personally knows a soldier who suffered mental trauma and has been helped by the organisation.

It is probably no surprise that Daniel wants to help others.

His father, Ryan, is Cumbria head of the Support Our Soldiers appeal.

Support Our Soldiers is a charity that collects shoe boxes of gifts for soldiers serving abroad.

Ryan started the Maryport shoe box campaign which was grew to the extent that he took charge of all of Cumbria.

Daniel said: "I have had those shoe boxes during my time abroad. They are gifts from home and everyone appreciates them."

Daniel has hired a wheelchair accessible van to transport anyone in wheelchairs.

Non-veterans will be charged at a standard rate "but that isn't going to be much and all will go to the Poppy Appeal."
