A CUMBRIAN chamber choir is due to perform a programme of music inspired by biblical psalms.

The Wordsworth Singers and its musical director Mark Hindley return to Workington on Sunday, November 18 with its concert Songs of Deliverance.

The concert features works by Roland de Lassus and Heinrich Schütz. Lassus was a Flemish composer working during the late Renaissance, and Schütz was a German 17th century musician.

Both composers looked to the biblical psalms for inspiration and the concert will include works which cover a range of emotions, from deepest anguish and despair to eventual redemption and deliverance.

Helen Hutchinson, the choir's administrator, said: "We did not plan this concert as part of November's WW1 centenary commemorations, but actually the themes of the programme fit very well as a reflection on the tragedy of conflict and war.

"The music is very rich and resonant, and we are very much looking forward to singing it in the lovely acoustic of Our Lady Star of the Sea & St Michael's."

The Wordsworth Singers perform at venues all over Cumbria, and last sang at this church in 2000.

The choir will be joined for the concert by cellist Lowri Preston, based in Fife, and will be directed from the chamber organ by Mark Hindley.

Mark has directed The Wordsworth Singers since 2009, and has established a reputation for adventurous programming and vibrant performances.

The choir draws experienced singers from across Cumbria and is a previous winner in the Cumbria Life cultural awards.

The concert at the Banklands' church starts at 3.30pm.
