ROUNDABOUTS on the county's road network are to be made available for commercial sponsorship.

Cumbria County Council has adopted a new policy which will see sponsored roundabouts at busy locations.

Signs will be produced and installed by the county council as part of the offer, with advertisers providing their own artwork and company logo.

Sponsorship revenue will be used to contribute towards the maintenance of the roundabout network.

Cllr Keith Little, CCC's cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “This is a good opportunity for local firms to take advantage of some excellent locations across the county to promote their services or products.

"Working with the council’s road safety and highways teams, we’re able to offer a full service – from design to installation of the signs – and we’ll ensure they are placed in locations which will not distract drivers, with a maximum of four signs at each roundabout.

"I’m looking forward to seeing a variety of signs when I am out and about on the road network.”

Roundabouts included in the scheme include Asda, Kendal; Booths, Kirkby Lonsdale; County Square, Ulverston; Crooklands; Plumgarths; Romney Road, Kendal and Shenstone.
