A school near Cockermouth is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its out-of-school club.

The club at Bridekirk Dovenby School was set up in 2008 and has proved a big success.

The school's business manager Christina Brentnall was a founding member of the original parent committee.

"I feel so privileged to have been a part of this growing service for our families over the years," she said.

"We were one of the first schools in the area to set up before and after school care, breaking new ground, but we had a desire to provide a facility for our children where they could have stability whilst parents worked.

"This desire continues today. The staff who run the Out Of School Club work elsewhere in school as teaching assistants and midday supervisors. They have a great time with the children.

"Often when parents come to collect them at the end of the day, children want to stay. It's a real testament to the fantastic staff we've had working with the children over these last 10 years and to them we give our thanks as we celebrate our first milestone birthday.

"We've had party food and games all week so that no child misses out. Ninety three per cent of the children attending school are registered to use the club so we've had a party every night!"
