Ninety Blindbothel residents took part in Sunday’s nationwide Battle’s Over tribute which involved the lighting of a beacon - one of 1,300 around the UK - to commemorate the Armistice centenary.

Candlelit St Michael’s Fell Church at Mosser was packed for a short talk, given by Sandra Shaw of the Lorton and Derwent Fells Local History Society, about men from the parish who had taken part in the war.

Blindbothel teenager Sam Moore read ‘For the Fallen’, a poem by Laurence Binyon.

The crowd then made their way through torrential rain to hear local bugler Clive Barnard play the Last Post and watch the lighting of a 4m high beacon whose specially commissioned brazier Sam Moore had helped to design and build at Smith Engineering in Maryport.

Blindbothel Parish Council organised the event. Chairman Bev Rowland said: “We are delighted that so many local people took part, although limited space at the church and beacon site sadly prevented us from widening our invitation to people of neighbouring parishes.

"Particular thanks go to Mosser farmers Jane and Alan Clark for allowing us to position the beacon on their land and to Jane for the beautiful hand crafted banner which she made for the occasion.”

Around £200 was raised, which will be donated to the Royal British Legion with a contribution to the upkeep of St Michael’s Fell Church.
