WESTMORLAND and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron visited Settlebeck School, Sedbergh, to plant a silver birch tree in the school grounds as part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project.

The project was launched in 2015 when an appeal was made to all 53 Commonwealth nations to contribute areas of indigenous forest to be preserved in perpetuity to mark Her Majesty's lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.

As part of the project, the Woodland Trust provided five trees to be planted in South Lakeland.

Led by Sarah Queen, Head of Science, students involved in Settlebeck’s wildlife garden helped with the tree planting.

Mr Farron talked to the pupils about the importance of trees to combat climate change.
