COCKERMOUTH bellringers are delighted to have recruited two new members, supporting a national campaign to find 1,400 more ringers - the number who died in World War One.

Following some training, Peter Harrington and Diana Mead joined the All Saints' Church team to ring before the Armistice service.

The national Ringing Remembers initiative involved groups across the country ringing on the 100th anniversary of the death of any local ringers. It also included a recruitment campaign to get more people ringing.

Joan Ingrams, of the All Saints' team, said: "1,400 ringers died in the First World War and it is hoped that Britain can get the same number learning to ring this year in their memory.

"We were pleased to welcome two new members, who have now completed the basic training and will be a useful addition to our band."
