A FLOODING hotspot in Grange-over-Sands needs to be fixed “sooner rather than later,” a meeting has heard.

Last month Windermere Road residents were swamped with more than three foot of water again, and now county councillors have acted.

At its meeting in Kendal on Monday, the South Lakeland Local Committee formally committed £20,000 as its share towards emergency works.

The project involves Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council and the Environment Agency.

Karen Johnson, the county council area manager for South Lakeland, told the meeting: “That area of Grange floods regularly and there are concerns it may do so again with the next heavy rainfall.”

Local councillor Bill Wearing (Con, Grange) said there was a huge amount of rainfall during Storm Callum on October 13.

He said: “The residents of Windermere Road flooded yet again with up to three foot of water on the road.

“This is just a small scheme that will hopefully help alleviate flooding over the next few months. The main scheme, driven by the Environment Agency, is worth over £1 million.”

Cllr Wearing thanked South Lakeland District Council leader Giles Archibald and SLDC officers for attending a meeting at the start of the month to get something done.

Cllr Archibald (Lib Dem, Kendal Town) told the meeting:  “I fully support the work to be done there. I would publicly commit SLDC to working with Cumbria County Council and the Environment Agency to fix this problem.

“It needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed soon and we will play our part.”
