TRIBUTES have been left at the roadside where a 30-year-old Millom man lost his life in a two-car collision involving eight people.

Alan Johnston was driving a BMW on the A5093 on Saturday night at around 11.35pm when he was involved in a collision with another BMW.

Mr Johnston was pronounced dead while two others were flown to the Royal Preston Hospital where their condition yesterday was described as serious but stable.

Five other people were treated at Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

The road was closed for several hours after the crash and a Coastguard helicopter was called in to transfer two of the casualties to hospital.

Members of Millom Coastguard assisted at the scene by clearing a landing area for the helicopter while firefighters from Millom and Broughton also attended and used specialist cutting equipment to free casualties from the vehicles.

A police spokesperson said: "Police have formally identified a man who died in a collision at Millom.

"Alan Johnston, 30, of Millom, died following a collision involving two BMWs. He was driving one of the cars.

"It happened at about 11.35pm on Saturday on the A5093 at The Hill.

"Five other people were treated at Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

"Two of the casualties were said to be in a serious but stable condition.

"Officers are appealing for information about the collision. Anyone with information should contact PC 2032 Matthews on 101."

A floral tribute left at the side of the road included childhood photographs of Mr Johnston.

The note read: "God bless you Alan, taken far, far, far, far too soon.

"We will remember you always and all the happy memories of when you were little.

"Sleep well Al, may you rest in peace."

The A5093 was the scene of another fatal collision three years ago.

Cousins Aaron and Dean Heasley were both killed after the car they were travelling in smashed into a tree on the A5093 on November 23, 2015.

The pair were travelling between The Hill junction and Millom junction when their blue Volkswagen Golf left the road by the entrance to Ghyll Scaur Quarry and hit a tree.

Aaron Heasley, 25, of Victoria Street in Millom, and Dean Heasley, 24, of Settle Street in Millom, were pronounced dead at the scene after the one-car collision
