AN INJURED dog is in desperate need of a life changing operation after it was violently abused in illegal badger baiting.

The RSPCA Westmorland Branch has sent out a plea to the public to help raise £1,000 for a special skin graft operation that will hopefully give the border terrier another shot at life.

Winnie, who is approximately three-years-old, was brought to the RSPCA after she was found with severe injuries consistent with being used for badger baiting in Cumbria.

She had significant lower jaw injuries where the skin had been been ripped away and there were multiple bite wounds to the front half of her body.

The surgery she needs would usually cost several thousands of pounds but Oak Hill Veterinary Centre, in Windermere, has reached out to the charity and will be doing the operation at a much lower cost.

Kathryn Sharpe, the veterinary surgeon, who will be doing the procedure, said it was a very delicate surgery but it was one that needed to be done in order for Winnie to get a good chance of a healthy future.

"One of the difficulties is that her past is unknown," she said. "but what we can do now is look after her and make sure she gets a good future because she deserves it.

Christine Lowe, the Branch Manager at RSPCA Westmorland, said the perpetrators behind Winnie's violent abuse have still not been caught.

"When Winnie was given to us her jaw was completely exposed" she exclaimed "She is seriously prone to infections and by having this operation it will hopefully get her on the road to recovery."

Mrs Lowe said the charity has already had to pay for a number of operations for several animals this year so they have turned to the public for help.

"We are sending an appeal because we believe Winnie's story is worth telling," she said. "She's an absolute character, she is strong and feisty.

"Any donations towards her surgery will be much appreciated."

If things all go to plan Winnie may have a potential new home for the new year.

If you would like to donate to the appeal you can do so by sending a cheque to RSPCA Westmorland Branch, 112a Highgate, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 4HE.

Winnie's operation is due to be on Monday December 10.
