Seventy people will receive a care bag this Christmas - thanks to Cockermouth WI.

Members and friends have produced and filled 70 care bags for individuals and families who use the North Lakes Foodbank.

Margaret Hewitson made the cloth bags, which have been filled with toiletries.

"I thought it would be a nice thing to do for the Foodbank at Christmas, we are wanting to help people who are less fortunate. We all know these kind of things take a chunk out of the family allowance," she said.

New president Evelyn Johnston said: "The Foodbank knows exactly who needs help and is an important part of the community, we wanted to do what we could."

Mrs Johnston, a tour guide at the Lakes Distillery, has been a member of the WI since it started. She took over from Jo Crozier, who stood down after four years in the role.

"I'm delighted to be president, we have lots planned for the coming year," she said.

The group recently gave £1,100 to Hospice at Home West Cumbria following an evening of cocktails, canapes and a raffle.
